In Ireland, dogs are regarded as ‘man’s best friend’, however our response to their welfare does not match this sentiment. The dog shelter crisis demands urgent attention as nearly all of our shelters are at maximum capacity because of repeated abandonment. With a personal interest and commitment of owning four dogs and a profound love for animals, particularly canines, I was compelled to address this crisis through my Final Year Illustration project. Within this project, there are three main design outcomes, all titled using the word ”forgotten”. This project’s aim is to bring attention to the forgotten dogs in our country - the ones in our local dog shelters.
I developed an illustrated poster series that changes under varying lighting conditions - called ”A light for the forgotten”. Each poster delivers an impactful and unique message about an issue which contributes to the dog shelter crisis. An informative plaque is displayed alongside each poster, describing their meaning and the significance they have.
Additionally, I strategically placed stickers in areas around Wicklow and Dublin frequented by dog owners. These stickers are designed to educate the public in a more engaging and interactive manner - the sticker series is called ”A hunt for the forgotten”. Visitors to the @pawsandconsider Instagram can participate in a sticker hunt activity. This activity encourages the Irish public to search for the stickers, share their findings on social media, and then potentially win a doggy hamper as a result!
Last but not least, I wanted to show the Irish public that there are practical and accessible ways for individuals to support local dog shelters - if adopting a dog or donating directly isn’t an option. I did this by producing step-by-step guides demonstrating the creation of snuffle mats and braided toys for dogs - The mats and braided toys as a series are called ”A gift for the forgotten”. As part of this project, I worked alongside the DSPCA. Through several interviews with ther staff, I gained an insight into the dog shelter crisis and how they deal with it first-hand. As this project progressed, I donated several mats and braided toys to them for their dogs.
All of these outcomes span various design spaces, including an exhibition display, simple yet informative illustrations in public spaces and inspiring community action through craft efforts. The initiative is documented and shared on the instagram account @pawsandconsider.
